Artist Exhibition: Michael Brussel | Visual Language

Join us for Artist Exhibition: Michael Brussel | Visual Language at the Hamilton Center for the Arts. The opening reception is Friday, September 19th at 6pm, as part of the final 2026 Village Art Walk.

Michael Brussel is a painter and architectural designer based in Syracuse, New York. In his painting workshop - housed in a former lantern factory in downtown Syracuse - he works on large canvases that serve as the site where painting and architecture meet. Brussel’s creative practice is largely influenced by his background in architecture.

In 2022, he received his Bachelor of Architecture from Virginia Tech. During his time in Virginia, he developed an interest in material systems - particularly masonry construction methods - and the wide potential of results that can come from repeating simple units.

Brussel’s paintings explore the concept of emergence through repetitious processes. In his paintings, he uses modular grids, mechanical gestures, and disruptive layering techniques to produce compositions that balance simplicity and complexity. For Brussel, painting is a way to investigate the relationship between calculation and intuition, and create works that speak to our contradictory desires for structured order and unbound self-expression.
